Map of St. Maarten

Saint-Maarten (or Sint Martin – the Dutch version) is a small, tropical island in the Caribbean, approximately 150 miles south and east of Puerto Rico.  Discovered by Christopher Columbus (although he never set foot on the island), he claimed the island for Spain.  The day he spotted the island was the holy day of St. Martin of Tours.  A 1648 treaty between The Netherlands and France divided the island roughly in half, even though it subsequently changed hands sixteen times. Its original economy was based on sugar plantations and slave labor, but as slavery was outlawed, it eventually became a prime tourist center in the Caribbean.

St. Maarten is governed on the north by the French and to the south by the Dutch.  With only 37 miles of area, it is easy to reach every point in a short time.  Its most striking characteristic is the miles of white sandy beaches that are found around the circumference of the island.  With warm temperatures in the 80’s year-round, it is a North American and European destination for those seeking sun, water and entertainment.
Every part of St. Maarten has its attractions, with subtle cultural differences.  The northern French side is slightly more relaxed and sports open-air markets, world-class resorts and the best restaurants on the island.  The southern Dutch side has long white beaches, casinos, extensive shopping and the port of entry for both airplanes and cruise ships.
